What's Up Wednesday- Beach edition

I love this link up! You can do the same today over at The Larson Lingo, Mix and Match Mama, and Sheaffer Told Me To.  I get so many recipes and enjoyed reading overviews of what other bloggers are up to. ;)

What we are eating this week: Brick and Spoon, The Hangout, Lulu's, Acme Oyster, Blue Water BBQ, Sea and Suds, Shrimp Basket- to name a few of our beach favs. ;)

What I am reminiscing about: Lazy summer days by the pool...

What I am loving: Time at the beach...

What we have been up to:  BEACHIN' IT!

What I am dreading: We have been enjoy having our toes in the sand since last Thursday. I am dreading having to go back home and get serious about our school routine.

What I am working on:

The stakes are in the ground...what am I working on? Lots of house stuff...we have to shop/purchase all the lighting in the house before we can close. What seems like a fun task has already been a little daunting. Totally fun, but daunting. We are working on general "house stuff."

What I am excited about: BUILDING A HOME!!!!

What I am watching/reading: I am totally slacking in this dept. I want to be better about reading and once I get in my school year groove reading is going to be part of my routine. #fingerscrossed

What I am listening to: I recently discovered a few podcasts that I enjoy. I am new to that world #Iknow #behindthetimes but would love any podcast suggestions. ;)

What I am wearing: a whole lotta swimsuits...for 5 more days!!! Once we get home I will have to switch/clean out closet as we prepared for Fall.

What I am doing this weekend: Duh, I don't think I need to say it again. We will soak up the beach until it's time for the 10 hr trip back to the Lou.  Then we have a fun filled Labor Day weekend planned with friends!

What I am looking forward to next month:

I am loving this season of our life. Both kids are enjoying school and are participating in activities. This is what it's all about right!?!?! I am so excited for Saturday morning soccer games and fun weekends with friends! *One day we will miss it, right!??"

Bonus question: What best back to school lunch ideas and/or tips do you have?

Oh my goodness...I won't even type how I packed lunches before using Yumboxes. There is a first time buyer coupon and usually you can find another one somewhere using google. ;) They are TOTALLY worth the money. It's taken 2 years of lunch packing but I now have 5 boxes for Wyatt.  I pack lunches on Sunday's and don't have to do anything throughout the week. The top keeps everything separated and nothing goes from one section to another. (including ranch ;) The clear container is dishwasher safe and super easy to pop out so....#1 tip is GET A YUMBOX - you can thank me later.

Entryway bench #schmitzhome2.0

If you have been reading for any period of time you know we are in the process of building a home. We are so excited for this journey and have been praying for the Lord's guidance through this entire process! We didn't expect be to taking this route in find a new home but it's where we landed and we couldn't be more excited. Just last week we got stakes (I never knew one could be so excited about 4 wood poles in the ground.)!!!

We have been slowly purchasing lighting and other items needed for the house but I also would be lying if I haven't been trying to come up with some cute decor items as well. I don't have a good picture of this area of the house yet but this is the entryway. Front door is to the right...you enter and see that odd shaped wall. The display home has a fancy (too fancy for my taste) table.

My plan is a bench and a plant for this area. Problem is I am being picky with this bench search. LOL! I don't want one of the ones with all the bins under...let's be real...this bench isn't going to be where we sit. This isn't the door we will enter. There might be a guest putting on shoes from time to time but mostly it's just "for looks." I want a clean look but one I can change with the seasons,  hence the bench because I plan to change the pillows throughout the year. ;)

So what do you think? Like the bench idea? Have a better idea? Leave a comment and let me know ;) I am open to suggestions...

Friday Favorites

I am linking up like most Fridays with Erika, Narci, and Andrea to share a list of my current favorites but this week....

I don't have a list of favorites...I have one  (ok, maybe two) HUGE favorite and it's THIS:

We have our toes in the sand for the next 9 days!!!! We are taking advantage of the last bit of summer because when we arrive home it turns to "fall mode" really quick.

Though I couldn't let this day go by without mentioning our PROGRESS...we have PROGRESS on the Homefront #inserthappydance : We have stakes. I haven't ever been more excited to see wood poles in the ground. LOL!! Yahoooooo!!!!!

Traveling with Little Ones – Things to Keep in Mind!

C:\Users\Paul\Desktop\Niche Site Folder Structure\Mommy Stroller\Guest Posts\Images\Traveling with Little Ones - Feature Image.png
Traveling can often be stressful, exhausting, and frustrating. When including children in your traveling, it can be twice as demanding and taxing. Of course, it is fun to bring along the little ones, but it is best to be prepared for your adventure. Whether traveling by plane, train, car, or boat, being prepared is always the first step to a smooth trip. Making a list of what you want to bring or do before your departure can help ensure that you don’t forget anything. Becoming familiar with the area you will be traveling to is also a good idea as you will be prepared for what to expect. Look up the weather and be sure that everyone in your family is packed for the weather of the area of which you will be traveling to.
Traveling with kids can be intimidating; however, if you are prepared, then it can be a breeze. Here are tips for a few different areas which can make or break your experience of traveling with your little ones.
Packing
Packing for your family can feel overwhelming however if you organize the process, it can be much more manageable.
  • Give each person their own bag of clothes to avoid having to dig through bags and suitcases to get dressed.
  • When packing for little ones, gather all the clothes and accessories for each individual outfit and place each outfit in a separate gallon bag. Include hair accessories and socks.
  • Always include extra clothes, so you will be prepared for muddy puddles and food spills during your travels.
  • Bring your child’s night time teddy bear or doll to make them more comfortable at bedtime.
  • Bring along travel-friendly baby equipment such as an umbrella stroller or a travel crib.
Being Prepared for Different Scenarios
When traveling with little ones, it is always best to be prepared for anything. Whether you are traveling on a plane, train or car, every parent’s goal is to keep the peace and being prepared when traveling can help achieve that goal.
  • Pack quiet activities such as coloring books, toys, or games to entertain the children. It is easiest to designate one bag as the ‘activity bag’ for easy transportation and accessibility.
  • There is always the possibility of your child getting motion sickness so bring along plastic bags, an accessible change of clothes, and consider using motion sickness medication.
  • When traveling with an infant, pack extra bottles in their diaper bag so you don’t have to worry about washing bottles along the way.
  • When traveling with children, always allow for extra time for bathroom breaks as well as time to take a break from riding in the car. It can be difficult for children to stay seated for very long so it can help to get them opportunities to run around and stretch their legs along the way.
Outdoor Activities
Traveling or vacationing outdoors has its own challenges. Always pack for the upcoming weather and bring extra layers in case it happens to rain or get cold.
  • If you will be hiking, tell each child to look for a walking stick or a rock in the shape of a heart. This scavenger hunt game will make the outdoors exciting for them and it will also entertain them along the way.
  • Bring extra shoes for everyone as it may get muddy and dirty. Having a pair of extra shoes will keep your tent clean as well as your car.
  • If camping, pack games and activities that can be played in a tent if it rains. If it is your kid’s first time camping, I recommend getting a cabin tent so that everyone feels close together and feels “at home.”
  • If kayaking, be sure to find a right kayak for your child. It’ll also be wise to paddle with your child in the same kayak for the first few times.
  • Bring along snacks and packed lunches so you don’t have to prepare or purchase anything along the way.
  • Consider where your baby will eat outdoors. Setting a car seat on the ground can serve as a temporary high chair.
Tourist Destinations
Traveling to a tourist destination can be stressful. It is always best to plan for limited storage and limited accessibility to bathrooms.
  • When traveling to a tourist destination spot, opt for a lightweight stroller rather than a larger, bulkier model. This will help with storage, transportation, and ease of use while traveling.
  • Before leaving the hotel room, make sure everyone uses the bathroom as it could be a while until you find a public restroom.
  • If taking a taxi, still consider car seat laws and safety.
  • When you arrive at your destination, discuss a mutual meeting spot with older children should someone get separated from the group.
  • Bring along a diaper bag with a blanket that can be draped over a stroller for diaper changing, if necessary.
Closing Comments
Traveling with children can sound intimidating but with preparation and planning, it can be more relaxing and less demanding. Keep in mind that it is likely that your sleep will be interrupted as it may be difficult for them to stick to their sleep schedule when traveling. Traveling can be exhausting with children so it is a good idea to schedule one extra day of vacation for recuperation at home prior to returning to school or work. Pack a garbage bag and place dirty clothes in it throughout your trip so you know which clothes need to be washed when you arrive home.
Another tip that’s useful is to try to travel in the wee hours of the morning as your children will likely sleep through most of the transportation, making the trip easier and less stressful for everyone. When traveling with children, always plan for the best but prepare for the worst - allow for extra time and try not to stick to a rigorous schedule as children often don’t follow schedules.
Traveling with children can disrupt your sanity and plans; however, if you are prepared for possible incidents and issues, you will have a more successful trip allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Beach prep...*car travel*

T-minus 36 hours until we leave for the beach....but who's counting?!?! We have traveled to Gulf Shores, AL with the kids a few times now. The drive is about 11 hours...just when everyone is FINISHED being in the car we are there!!!

I feel like we can only pack so many movies, DS games, ipads, etc. before they get board of them. I am hoping to be a little more prepared this year since the kids are getting older and bored more easily.

Mark is the vacation man (meaning he wants to make the most of EVERY. SINGLE. MINUTE. he is off work) so he has decided to leave for vacation on a Thursday. We aren't going to tell the kids...just pick them up from school and hit the road! We plan to get a heavy after school snack and then will drive about 3.5 hours to Memphis, TN and stop for a "later" dinner and stretch our legs. The plan will be to drive a couple more hours after dinner before stopping for the night. Mark and I are pretty good at booking hotels on the road, thanks to our Expedite STL days, so we hope to continue our streak of booking via the iPhone as we travel down the road.

When we wake Friday morning we are hoping to only have to drive a little more than 2 hours to get to Mobile, AL. Every year we drive right past the battleship on the water and memories from my childhood begin to play. We took the tour one year and it's something I will never forget. Since we are leisurely traveling we plan to stop Friday morning and take the tour. There seems to be a lot to do on site before driving the last 1.5 hour stretch to the condo.
*since writing this post we have created another set of plans and aren't sure which we are doing. We like to keep vacations interesting around here. LOL!*

The trip is a little less than 11 hours total which is a good amount of time. It's not too much but is still a "long haul" with little ones. We are excited to break up the travel a bit this year! So...how am I preparing for the 2017 Beach trip?!!?! Pre-making snack bags, preparing travel books, changing out movies, etc.
I am sharing 3 things that are helpful for us...

1. Pre-making snack bags:

I always have enough snacks packed on road trips. We don't go hungry but I haven't found the best way to serve them on a long road trip. Somehow I always end up the one crawling all the way to the back with my rear in the air searching that one snack that they want this time. I vow to not have that this trip. I have pre-made snack bags. The amount they eat is more easily monitored this way as well. *and because I have to make it organized I labeled the bags so they have the same amount of bags with each item. It just makes things easier in advance. Less fighting right?!!?!?
Some of the snacks I pack: goldfish, nuts, a few candy bags, chips, dried fruit, trail mix, beef jerky, dry cereal (if you didn't notice the healthy factor kinda goes out the window on vacation)

2. Preparing travel books:

Thanks to Pinterest I have found a ton of free resources. I even created a Roadtrippin folder where I pinned all my resources. I attempted to find grade level printables to put in each of their books. I added some travel games and some mindless activities as well as educational ones. I didn't spend money on the sleeves to make these reusable. To be honest I didn't want to spend the money and have to keep up with dry erase markers and such. They are grade specific and not something I think they will want to do over and over again. On the sheets/activities I thought they might want to do more than once I just added a few copies of it in the books.

3. DVD's and electronics:

As far as electronics go we keep them pretty organized on a day to day basis. It makes like easier when we go to search for stuff. Chargers, games, etc. are all in one place...when we travel we literally take this entire container. It's super easy! We make sure all is charged up and ready. Lastly Wyatt and Sloane will both pick out new DVD's to watch. Rotation of new movies is a must. ;)

These 3 things are really helpful when taking long road trips. I love hearing what others do to make their car rides easier as well!! Yahoo for *almost* beach time!!!

Taco Tuesday - Book Club

I love how Andrea over at Momfessionals has started creating short videos of their day to day activities. I am going to try to make them more frequently as well. I am TOTALLY new to iMovie so you will have to bear with me but it's super cute to be able to see the afternoon in a 30 second clip.
Below is a short iMovie of our time at the Magic House...

You can read about our day HERE

Taco Tuesday - Book Club

*I am a total Momfessional's junkie! I love her!! If you don't follow her blog you totally should. ;) I don't know her IRL and she totally is too cool for me but yesterday Caroline spent the day with us so I knew it was a perfect day to complete another Book Club day. We have previously done Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Aliens Wear Underpants. They all LOVE these days and I love planning them too!

I purchased a few things from Amazon for the days events ;) ...

I had the table set for breakfast tacos. While I was getting the rest ready they all make their own tacos using these fun sticker books.

I also fun dragon coloring books at the $1 Tree so I grabbed all 3 of them one to use during quiet time that day. There were a few activities in them that we completed together as well.

Andrea's day included these SUPER cute taco crafts....they LOVED making these! We painted to plate in the morning and finished making the tacos in the afternoon after the paint dried.

Science and Math are Wyatt's favorite. They really enjoyed this but I am pretty sure it was Wyatt's favorite part of the day....Andrea explains THE EXPERIMENT in detail.

We finished the day with a simple craft...honestly this would be their least favorite craft of the day. LOL! It didn't keep their interest at all. *note to self...less crafts and more science next time for us*

Working' it Wednesday

If you follow me Instagram you probably came here thinking I was posting about our amazing book club yesterday....well that's not the case. That's tomorrow. ;/ I got my days mixed up, lol! Forgive me, it's the end of the summer.

On the second Wednesday of the month I try to participate in Shay and Erika's link up: Workin' It Wednesdays. So far this year I have shared:

Today is...

------Back to School -----

I mean, take a second and look at those sweet faces. Goodness how time flies!!

PICTURES: As we head back to school we take pictures with our chalkboard. It's such a fun tradition! It's even more fun to look back on the pictures and compare.

Backpacks: I have always purchased their backpacks from Pottery Barn Kids. I usually do this at the end of the school year when they clearance out the "last year colors." The backpacks come by the end of June and we don't think about it again until the first day of school. It's nice to have that task finished.

Clothes: Since they are both in the day school this is the first year they both have to wear uniforms. It was pretty easy last year shopping for boy uniforms. A few of these shorts and a few 3 button polo's and we called it a day. Dressing Sloane isn't as easy....I think we are almost finished but phew, it's been a task. She is only allow a specific plaid jumper and/or skort so finding her size was tricky. We pick all the items up from the alterations shop on Friday. Just in time! LOL!

Shoes: They each get a new pair of tennis shoes to start the school year. Usually Wyatt needs another pair by Christmas. (Holy boys that are hard on shoes) We shall see how Sis's hold up. I was a little late to the game this year in ordering Wyatt's. I am just hoping they are here by the first day.

Drop off: We drop off the first morning of school as a family.

Breakfast: After drop off then Mark heads to work and I head to breakfast with friends. It's so encouraging to have a group of mom's as support on that first day...or even the school year for that matter!!

Dinner: I always try to have some fun dinner a few nights before they go back to school. I have done THIS in the past and am looking forward to it this weekend. I am currently planning this year's Back to School Breakfast (for dinner).

What about you? What do you do to get ready to go back to school? Link up and share...

Magic House Monday (Tuesday edition)

Yesterday started our last week of summer...;( Both Wyatt and Sloane have a few things left they want to do. One of the places they wanted to go was the STL Magic House. It's not a place that's super high on my list but I took one for the team today. LOL!

Those sweet little faces...#insertallhearteyes Wyatt usually doesn't want to do this but today he asked...I quickly said YES! I even got a chance with both of them. It was so fun!! I remember as a kid traveling to STL and getting to touch this ball. #memories

The day actually started with Sis's Kindergarten Dr. appt. which as you know means shots...;( She did so well but goodness it's a hard appt. for Mamas.

Yes, I took a screen shot of my snap.
I am a newbie so please come follow along:

Wyatt tagged along...and rocked the big brother status!!!

So, after the appt. we spent the afternoon at the Magic House...

I took a few video's that I am going to attempt to make a iMovie but not today...LOL! Bring on Taco Tuesday...stay posted!!
