Prepping for an Amazing Trip...guest post

Kendra contacted me about writing a guest post on They Call Me Mama and I couldn't be happier that I said "yes!" She is a mom of 3 who LOVES to travel. She has some awesome advice for all you Mama's out there...ENJOY!
About Kendra: Bio, Kendra Thornton: Travel advocate, TV spokesperson, PR businesswoman, proud wife and mama of 3. I am a long time travel expert who has been packing my bags and traveling the world since I was 3 months old! I've found my utmost desire in life is right here in my own home. I have taken my excitement for travel and brought it to you with some of my favorite travel tips and tricks. Enjoy!

Summertime is here and with it comes BBQs, pool parties and your long awaited family vacation.  Whether it is a weekend trip to the beach or an adventure abroad, traveling with your kids deserves the utmost attention.  Below are some tips I’ve discovered along the way that should help make your trip an amazing experience.

ONE I like to plan trips for our family well in advance. I do this for several reasons. First, hotel and airline flights are much less expensive the farther ahead you book.  If your schedule is flexible, try researching when the cheapest flights are available to your ideal destination.  With a big family, saving a hundred dollars a ticket will really add up in your advantage! Second, I like to take my time in selecting where my family will stay. Some of your best resources can be found online using family travel forums or your own Facebook friends.  When my family traveled to Hawaii we were able to find a family recommended Honolulu hotel that provided fun for every member of our bunch.

TWO Your airline may give you the option to check in before you arrive at the airport, which saves you and your children an extra wait in the check-in line. Avoiding additional lines can help your children tolerate the long wait prior to arriving at the hotel, resort or bed and breakfast. Your kids will have more energy when you check into your room, and will certainly be less cranky.

THREE As we prepare to go on a trip, I make sure to have plenty of water bottles for everyone to stay hydrated. Even with air conditioning, it can be easy for children to become dehydrated in a vehicle or on an airplane. If you’re flying, you wont be able to bring a water bottle through security.  Instead of purchasing an over priced bottle in the airport terminal, bring an empty reusable water bottle in your carry-on to fill up at the water fountain. Dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, and certainly crankiness in children so being proactive is well worth it.

FOUR Always, always bring a fistful of extra grocery bags. You wouldn’t believe how many uses they have. On your trip, they’re great for carrying an impromptu picnic or relieving an overstuffed beach bag. When you’re headed home, you can use them to separate dirty laundry from clean clothes or hold a wet swimsuit from that last-minute dip.

I hope these help you and your family enjoy a safe and hiccup-free vacation.
