Wyatt and sleep....

I can't believe it's been a few days since my last post. It has been crazy around here... Wyatt has worn this Mama out. What 2 year old doesn't/can't nap?!?!? It stresses me out BIG TIME. If he naps he won't fall asleep until after 10pm. It's so weird. We will do our normal bedtime routine, which starts at 8pm, but he will not fall asleep until after 10pm. It's crazy! I hate it so much. In the moment I am so frustrated...we tried so hard to create a routine and it is no longer. He was always one to drop a nap early but really!?!? A 2 year old without a nap? Grrr.....I am fine with it as long as he doesn't get rude, unruly, disobedient, and grouchy.

There are so many factors that play into this. He has symptoms of the identical syndrome separation anxiety among many other things. I want to be strong. We have cut sugar, food dyes, and even nap and he won't sleep through the night. Grrr.....I am so over it. It's been almost 3 years and we have had probably 5-7 nights sleeps while we were away. It's awful .

Help!! Are there mom's out there who deal with this? There are so many factors...should I stop over analyzing? By the way...he falls asleep in our bed and sleeps with us-something I never thought I would "allow" but we have. It's crazy....any suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

  1. I am so sorry. We have also been dealing with this with our almost 3.5 year old. (Twin) girl. Her sister sleeps like an angel, but our Riah has always struggled to fall asleep and STAY asleeep. Same thing... If she naps she's up til 11pm some nights. We finally started really studying her sleep and discovered she was waking up due to strange breathing. Almost sleep apnea type symptoms. We took her to an ENT and they were shocked at the size of her tonsils. She will have surgery in March to remove adenoids, tonsils and have ear tubes placed. In no way did we recognize this earlier, but we think it may be a big part of her issue. Sleep is not restful for her so she fights it. Also... I've read some kids just don't naturally need that nap anymore. Horribly frustrating. But.. perhaps you keep him up from his nap for consecutive days... He will finally be tired enough to sleep at night. I totally empathize with your stress over this. You are tired and wearry. Sleep is so important for overall mama health. My husband and I have has times where we take turns dealing with Riah. The other one of us will go sleep somewhere else just so we get decent sleep. Thinking and praying for you!

  2. My son is only 19 months old, but he had terrible sleep issues where he wouldn't fall asleep till almost 1 am. He was never fussy just wanted to play, then he would sleep all day. It got to the point where my husband and I took turns sleeping on the couch while he would play, watch sprout channel and eventually fall asleep. My last straw was when he fell asleep at 9pm, woke up at midnight and was up until we were on our way to daycare that morning at 7pm.
I am from STL and we went and saw the "Sleep Lady" aka Nancy Birkenmeier at St. Luke's. She gave us a 3 step plan and as crazy as it is toally working. He is going to bed in his crib w/o a fight. Falling asleep between 7:45p and 8:15p. Our steps include #1 My son and I sleeping on an air matress for a week in his bedroom next to his crib. Step 2 DH puts him into his crib and sleeps on the air matress next to him, Step 3 we leave the room.

I highly recommend seeing her! It has totally saved us and as we are nearing the end DH and I will be back sleeping in our bed together for the first time in months!

Good Luck! Sleep issues are no joke and no fun! I feel for you!

  3. As far as the nap thing - both of my boys stop napping at 18 months. If they did nap, they stayed awake until 10:00 even though we put them to bed at 7;30. They now go to bed at 7;30 and normally sleep until between 7:00 and 7:30 AM (they are 3 and 4 years old) I'd much rather have them sleep at night then take a nap during the day :-)

  4. My son dropped his nap when he was 2 1/2. I wanted to cry! I did start putting him to bed earlier, so that helped!
He did sleep with us until my 2nd was born. He was 27 months at the time, and I knew I had to get him into his own bed. We did modified CIO and it worked quickly! He has been an awesome sleeper since then!

  5. I have a 14 month old with horrible sleep patterns, too. He is literally incapable of falling asleep on his own. If I put him in his crib he will play and play until I pick him up and .3 seconds later he is asleep... He's still waking 2-3 times a night and wants to be rocked back to sleep. We co slept with him from 2 months to 11 months because I found bfing so much easier that way. Initially he transitioned to the crib fairly easily. It took a few weeks of one of us sleeping on a matress in his room but he was finally sleeping. (Still not falling asleep on his own though...) Now it's bad as ever and we are at a total loss. It is SO hard to be a kind a loving Mom,wife, human when you are so behind on sleep!! We have ended up bringing him back into our bed again some nights just so we can attempt sleep. I never thought I'd be one of "those" Mom's either, but you do what you need to do to survive. I wish I had some advice to give you, but just know you are not alone!!
