Making daily tasks easier...

Right now it seems we are in the summer "go,go,go mode." I think it's the teacher in me but for some reason, even though Wyatt isn't in school, I treat summer like its a free for all. ;/ Yikes, I know. We stay up late, sleep in (as much as a 4 month old does), eat a little junkier, and even skip naps. I never thought I would be doing any of those things. Ha! I am such a rebel right?!? Anyway, the past few days/weeks we have really been working to get back on a routine. Summer still has a few weeks but with a 2 year old a routine doesn't happen overnight. I wish it did!!!
Mark's school is coming to a close and within 4 weeks we will be calling him Dr.!!! That's so crazy to me-Mark has been in school for the entire 8 years I have know him. I am excited for this next step in our life but I would be lying if I didn't say I am also a bit anxious.
Mark has been super busy finishing his graduation requirements, working his SIA shifts, doing Expedite stuff, and even spending time at his brother's office where he will soon be working! With all that said I have had lots of time with just the kids by myself. I love that time and it's not something everyone gets to enjoy so I do try to cherish every moment. I have started doing a few things that have made life a bit easier. They aren't huge things AT ALL and they take seconds to prepare but seem to make day to day life easier. I have seen/read about a few of these ideas lately and have started adapting them to our life.

1. I make sure to start/load the dishwasher every night before bed.
2. Unload the dishwasher as one of the very first things I do when I wake. (this keeps dishes out of the sink throughout the day because they can go straight into the dishwasher)
3. Have 3 small laundry baskets instead of one big one. *dirty diapers (since we use cloth), lights, and darks* Our laundry room is in the basement so this also makes it easier to carry. Once downstairs I can also separate a little more in detail. (I am pretty OCD when it comes to my laundry)
4. Split up fresh fruit and veggies as I am unloading the groceries. This is so annoying task because I hate going to the grocery. I find if I don't separate it, peel it, etc. as soon as I he home we don't eat as much. This also leads me to the next 2...
5. Wyatt's choices: He is all about doing things on his own lately this includes wanting to choose what he eats for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. He eats what eat for dinner. I created a spot in the refrigerator that he can reach and filled it with things he can eat. This is where the already splitting up fruit and veggies comes in handy. I can toss 1 baggy of fruit and one veggie with a few additional items for the day and we are set.
6. I use this same concept in the pantry. He has a special basket in a shelf he can reach.
7. Choose one big task a week. This is huge for me. I pride myself in being a multi-tasker. LOL! With 2 children and naps that don't yet overlap I have no "catch up" time during the day. They are also not old enough to send them to play on their own while I check things off my list. With that being said I able to wok on one large task a week and not feel swamped. I don't get upset when someone needs my attention because I know I have planned time throughout the rest of the week to complete this task. (even if you are a "SAHM" you can plan time to work on tasks during the time you are home) This really keeps my anxiety under control. Examples of "big tasks": paint bathroom, touch up paint in rooms, go through closet, etc.
8. (and final for now) Keep fresh flowers some where in the house. Fresh flowers are just pretty. I just grab the $7 bunch from the grocery about 2 times a month. That's only $14 a month-I know I would spend that amount on something dumb anyway...I keep telling myself I am going to plant some I can just pick and bring inside but it hasn't happened yet.

This turned out to be kinda lengthy post but I wanted it to be an encouraging one to others. I have found these little tasks make daily life easier. Give one a try or even create a few for yourself. I would love to hear small things you do to keep the" flow" in your household. Hope you'll are having a great weekend and enjoying the Olympics...we sure are!!!

  1. I absolutely love this!!! Some great ideas for mommies. :) Hope you're enjoying your summer and weekend.

  2. What an awesome idea re: the dishwasher! Such a great post, love. =)

    Keep Shining,

  3. I've been trying to stay on top of dishes, and just getting up 15 minutes earlier means I've had more time to do that kind of stuff and double-check our lunches for the day! I love the idea of fresh flowers, and totally agree! I need to start doing that! :-)

  4. Great ideas---I tell myself every weekend I am going to to get myself organized and then Sunday night comes, and nothing! Maybe tomorrow;) Make sure you check out our baby week that will be going on all week---lots of great posts and giveaways just for little ones!

I always love what you'll have to say...thanks for stopping by!
