Mommy Help (well, as much as possible)

A fellow blog friend posted about asking for "Mommy Help." Ha, by NO MEANS do I think I am a pro...LOL...it's only been 5 months but she asked for opinions on baby items and such.

*DISCLAIMER* I speak from only my experience. This is what worked for me...it's by no means the only way or even the "right" way if there is such so with that said please be thoughtful when/if leaving comments.

A few things I will FOR SURE use/do again when I have another baby (that makes me smile just thinking about it)

1. use cloth diapers

We use the 3.0 Bum genius diapers. I get them from a store called Cotton Babies. LOVE IT!!! I have a friend who used cloth diapers and I always thought it was a great idea. When I found out I was having twins there was no doubt in my mind it was cheaper to do cloth. Even with one baby it's cheaper. The cost up front is obviously more but it doesn't take long to catch up with the cost of the disposables. Now, I do have to say....I didn't start using them until Wyatt was about 3 months. Diapers were brought to one of my showers for a game and we used them until they were gone and started the cloth then. Also the diapers we had are sized so he was WAY to small in the beginning because we opted to start with smalls instead of x-smalls. I plan to do the same with the next baby. They go through WAY to many diapers in the first few weeks to do cloth...in my opinion. PS my laundry room is downstairs and I had a c-section so I wasn't supposed to use the stairs for at least 2 weeks. I wash diapers once a day so...that would not have worked either. Overall the diapers are super easy and at the time they only had solid colors but now I think in some styles they even have cool patterns. HA!

2. Bottles-Tommee Tippee

I do still breastfeed and would advise mothers to do that as long as possible but I do also pump A LOT! When I registered these bottle we not available. We actually went back and changed the register during my pregnancy. We really LOVE these bottles. There is a bottle, lid, and nipple. NO other pieces....also the nipple is JUST like a breast. No lie, Wyatt could go back and forth during a feeding! I know the bottles aren't available everywhere though. I know Babies R Us does have them!
Bibs...we also use the Tommee Tippee bibs. Unlike most bibs there is extra cloth up by the neck area. Nothing will leak through the neck hole...kinda hard to explain...but REALLY nice to have!

2 more must haves:

#3. a video monitor
-I know...you think I am crazy. I never thought I would NEED one of these. It makes transition so much easier. They are expensive but....there are tons of toys and clothes you could do without to make this happen. Believe me...prioritize! It's well worth it!!!

#4. The book: BabyWise
-This worked for us. I read it before I gave birth....we adjusted things to fit our lives....like we all do to every book. It's for sure not the bible but....who doesn't want a 8 week old putting themselves to sleep and sleeping through the night?!!? Just saying.....
This book was actually written by 2 Christian M.D.'s. There are 9 in the series. It's an awesome source of information!

Now....for the don'ts......
hmm.....
1. Don't think you are going to "be prepared" by washing ALL the clothes that are given to you. There may be some you never get to use due to likes/dislikes, seasons and weather, even sizes. Once you wash it you can't return or even give away because it's "used."  If I could do it all over again I wouldn't wash anything except the first size and box everything else up by size. That way as they grow you open the box and go from there!

2. You don't need 100 burp clothes, wash rags, and towels. Be honest...those aren't things you are going to let sit in your laundry basket. (well they shouldn't anyway) You will most likely wash right after use....why have so many?!?!

3. Creams, lotions, ointments.....be careful opening these things too! They expire and you may never use. For example: I never needed the cream for nipples while breastfeeding. I opened them and had them ready and waiting in the diaper bag. Oops, who wants to give opened product like that to a friend or even return...NOT!

Well, like I said....these few bits of advice are simply what I have found to work well with us in our family. To each his own...everyone does things different. You will find in motherhood everyone has their own ways. The sooner you realize to do what works for you and your family and to ignore others (I mean within healthy means...ha) the happier mommy you will be!

  1. I have heard a lot about bum genius diapers and heard they work really well. We started buying fuzzibunz but I would love to have both since I have heard so many great things about each brand =) It's nice to know so many people are using cloth so there are many people to ask =) Thanks for listing things you like and disliked! I thought the clothes idea was neat and to not wash everything right away! Great idea!

  2. Can I ask what kind of breast pump you use? I am due in may and trying to figure out what is best! I have been told by several moms to go with a medella pump.
